[Image “Header+-+Apple.png”] In 2021 I landed my dream job. Working at Apple, the holy grail of minimalistic design, innovation and creativity. A place where misfits have a seat on the table and where bold, crazy ideas are highly encouraged. As a Product Designer, working at Apple was a life changing experience, and all I can say is that I’ll keep carrying some of its principles with me wherever I go. In the one year that I worked at Apple, here are the top 10 lessons I learned: TL;DR – Apple is a unique company and I believe that the way they do product design can only be successful due to their business model, which allows for innovation, failure, risks, and strong focus on design craft excellence, even if it takes a long time to get there. – Build a great product, not an MVP. – Storytelling is the best skill we need to develop as product designers. – A top-down culture is not as bad as we think. Great design will take you far, great communication will take you even further: influence people and move things forward. Projects get built when enough people believe in them. From small talks to elaborating decisions to VP presentations. The way we speak, project ourselves and elaborate our thoughts is fundamental for getting consensus, influencing people, and moving things forward. My biggest learning was to put passion into my speech. Not only when presenting work, but especially when talking in meetings. Be truly excited about your work and show this excitement to everyone working around you. Jobs had an amazing ability to make his ideas understandable and memorable because he spoke with passion. People may not remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel: confident, interested, optimistic, bored, reluctant, etc. At the end of the day, we’re not only selling products to customers externally, but also selling our ideas to teams and stakeholders internally, and the key to any successful sale is communication. Storytelling is your superpower: are we deck designers after all? One of the things that surprised me the most was to see that for any piece of work being shared, designers would put together a keynote deck for it. It could be the smallest thing, like a quick look at the latest work progression, or big presentations, of course. There seems to be this stark duality for filmmakers nowadays. Hollywood is only banking on movies based on renowned franchises with utterly colossal budgets. But as I was informed by my professors when I got my film producer certificate in 2021, there’s more opportunities than ever for indie and low-budget filmmakers to find audiences and funding thanks to streaming platforms and simplified distribution. The massive IP head of this fish continues to feed on superhero movies and endless reboot culture while its small indie tail glides it through the ocean. But what about the middle? What happened to the mid-budget production? Why has it seemingly died out? What Makes a Mid-Budget Movie Mid-budget movies are loosely defined as having a production budget between $5–50 million. Some producers even define that upper end more liberally, up to $75–100 million, although $5 million would easily be an indie film with decent production values (think of 2000s indie juggernauts The Room and Shaun of the Dead, both of which were produced for about $6 million each). Millennials in particular feel nostalgic for mid-budget movies because they hit their peak when we were growing up and coming of age from the 1980s to the mid 2000s, right around the advent of Netflix but before streaming became the norm. Mid-budget movies weren’t always memorable hits that got nominated for awards. They could become cult classics like Pineapple Express or redeemed by time like Freddy Got Fingered, but they also encompass all these movies you can watch for free on YouTube Movies that came out in this same era. 80s and 90s mid-budget flicks have this certain charm to them, even the movies that wound up being flops: sometimes they were blatant cash grabs and the actors were just phoning it in as a result, or they were fairly forgettable roles with paper-thin writing that preceded an actor’s big break. Hell, not just actors — the film world was SCREAMING upon finding out that noted DP Janusz Kaminski did the lighting for Vanilla Ice’s now-cult classic cringefest Cool as Ice before he worked on Schindler’s List. The mid-budget movie has encompassed unintentionally hilarious turkeys to hyped-up Academy nominees (some of which may have been overhyped). The range is wider than you think since they’re not given leviathan blockbuster budgets, but aren’t tiny indie films made with spit and staples that go on to become classics like Clerks. Once my friends got their hands on it, the app spread like wildfire. We hit the top of the Apple App Store’s dating category (at one point beating out Tinder), and within 3.5 months, we had 1 million users. We were everywhere, from The Wall Street Journal to The Colbert Report. But then came lawsuits, a rebrand, an acquisition, and a failed IPO before I became one of the few entrepreneurs to sell their company and later buy it back at a better price. Here’s the inside scoop on my journey and the 12 lessons I learned — from idea validation to acquisitions and negotiations. Let’s dive in. ONS: One Night Stand or Over Night Success? The next, I was pulling an all-nighter to keep the servers from crashing and fielding press inquiries. Yet, the road to such an explosive launch was anything but overnight and littered with failures. My first attempt at a mobile app didn’t quite take off. It was a vibrator app for Windows Phone (hey, don’t judge), and while it amused me to think of a vibrator in everyone’s pocket, it didn’t exactly cause a buzz. By late 2012, I was almost a year into a struggling dating startup I created in Seattle, cornily named “Heard About You” (totally a dating site and not a 90s sitcom!). Things started looking up when I won a spot to present “Heard About You” to investors at an online incubator. Boost VC, a brand-new accelerator in Silicon Valley, discovered me from an online pitch. They invited me to spend 3 months with them in their inaugural class. And that’s where the alchemy happened. I entered Boost’s accelerator as the only solo founder, and it weighed on me. My girlfriend at the time, still long distance in Seattle, lent her design skills, but I didn’t have any real teammates. Halfway through Boost, with the help of some liquid courage, I took a hard look at my company’s chances, and I did not like what I saw. I doubted my ability to get enough attention, users, or investment. And I still didn’t have a co-founder. The resulting drunken conversation with entrepreneurs from other startups in the accelerator office was refreshingly honest, funny, and raw. We lamented that dating sites discouraged people from being upfront about their sexual desire; we decided you could simply say that you want to ‘bang’ someone. I vented my frustration that my idea for matching friends-of-friends required a ‘middle man’ without equally strong motivations; we narrowed the search to your Facebook friends. The idea was to go for the jugular. People are curious about who they can hook up with, especially with whom they’ve already met. Lesson 1: Ask yourself hard questions about your startup’s viability. Start free-flowing conversations about your approach and upcoming challenges with blunt, knowledgeable people without a vested interest who can view your startup from the outside. It was a good question, and a good reminder that everything is a matter of perspective. For writer Jacqueline Dooley, Mother’s Day comprises both joy and sorrow after one of her two daughters died of cancer. I opened it, saw that it was to be the first of a long awaited column called “Personal Science” for the Observer, where I was then an editor. I assumed it was good–Seth’s work always was–so I marked it as unread and told myself it could wait until Monday. On that Saturday, less than 72 hours later, Seth collapsed of a fatal heart attack while hiking in Berkeley. It would have been so easy for me to reply and and tell him how happy I was with what he had written. Or how much he’d helped me over the years and how excited I was to be working with him.      Dünyaca ünlü Brezilyalı futbolcu Neymar Jr’ın ismiyle düzenlenen Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five etkinliği, 29 Şubat ve 1 Mart tarihlerinde İzmir’de düzenlenecek. Bu sene 5. yılını kutlayacak turnuvaya geride kalan 4 yılda 75 ülkeden yüz binlerce kişi katıldı. Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five’ın Türkiye’deki 15 şehirle birlikte düzenlenecek İzmir elemeleri, hafta sonu İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi ve Gençlik Spor Şube Müdürlüğü’nün destekleriyle yapılacak. 

Göztepe Paten Sahası’nda organize edilecek elemelere 18-25 yaş arasındaki herkes katılabilecek. Turnuvanın Türkiye finali ise 5 Nisan’da düzenlenecek. Finallerden şampiyon olarak ayrılacak takım Brezilya’da düzenlenecek Dünya Finalleri’ne giderek, Türkiye’yi temsil edecek. Dünya çapında büyük bir kitleye hitap eden organizasyonun en önemli özelliği gol yiyen takımdan bir oyuncunun çıkıyor olması. Beşer kişiden oluşan takımlardan birinin son oyuncusu çıktığında veya 10 dakikalık oyun süresi dolduğunda maç sona eriyor ve maçın kazananı ilan ediliyor.
