On March 17, Newchip (under its corporate name of Astralabs) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors. This would allow the company to restructure and continue operating. However, on May 11, in a shocking development, the bankruptcy court ordered Newchip shut down and liquidated, leaving thousands of startups that had paid to join the accelerator out in the cold. Newchip claims to have helped 5000 pre-seed through Series A startups that graduated their program, with 1200 more in their current cohorts. Each startup paid $8K to $20K to join after being promised guidance, mentorship, and introductions to investors, promises that were largely unfulfilled. Was Newchip a legitimate accelerator providing valuable services to young startups destroyed in an attempted coup by vengeful former employees? Last week I was writing about BuzzFeed News and how, even after changing so many of the default assumptions of modern journalism, the model they pioneered appears to be on the edge of ruin. This week it’s the turn of Vice Media, the America-Canadian lifestyle, culture and politics magazine-turned-website that will long be held up as a pillar of hipster culture. The New York Times reported last week that the company — once valued at $5.7bn after investments from Disney and Rupert Murdoch — was on the brink of bankruptcy. I’m not going to leave myself a hostage to fortune on the outcome of Vice’s current travails. The cultural penetration of the Vice name has been on the wane for several years, and the origins of the brand have been mired in controversy. Instead, I want to talk a little about what Vice is, was, and what the future for alt-media looks like. Vice was, in fact, pretty much the first publication that ever hired me to write for them (excepting the Oxford Times, where I had a column for my final year at university). They paid me real money when I was a 21-year-old know-nothing aspirant hack, and at a rate of something like 30p a word (I’ve not been offered many more lucrative freelance deals). The first piece I ever wrote for them was a love letter to London’s Trocadero, a rundown arcade in the West End which is now a boutique cinema and retail complex. It’s still one of my favourite pieces I’ve ever written. Over the next couple of years, I wrote an array of features for Vice, covering topics ranging from homelessness to Scientology, child geniuses to air pollution. I remember (though I can’t find the exact quote) that one of the first edits that happened to my copy at Vice was changing “backpacked German tourists” to “backpacked German dickheads”. Of all the places that I’ve written for, Vice comes the closest to speaking with a single voice. They certainly had the power to create star columnists like Clive Martin and Joel Golby, but there was still a baked-in form of witty cynicism. They liked to say things that wouldn’t be printed in the mainstream press, and they liked them to be spoken with the singular Great Vice Voice. The story of Vice, the trajectory that the brand has been on, has basically been the story of cool. In the idea of cool, indeed in its very nature, is the idea of impermanence. Cool is not presupposed or inherited; it’s earned. Things must become cool. Stasis is fundamentally uncool, only change can generate new trends, new preferences, new fashions. Hi there, As we enter mid-May, I’m struck again by the swift passage of time. The year, which seems like it only just began, is already more than a third of the way over. One of the most affecting pieces I’ve read recently on Medium is a meditation on time’s fast flow, and our unfortunate tendency to think we’ve got an endless supply of it. Writer Ryan Holiday implores us to remember why we can’t bank on waiting for the future to arrive when it comes to connecting with the people we love. Over the years, I have had many encounters with Japanese websites — be it researching visa requirements, planning trips, or simply ordering something online. And it took me a loooong while to get used to the walls of text, lavish use of bright colors & 10+ different fonts that sites like this one throw in your face: [Image “Body+-+Asset+1.png”] Though there are numerous examples of sites with a more minimalistic and easy to navigate design for someone used to Western websites, it is worth examining why this more convoluted style remains prevalent in Japan. And just to be clear, these are not remnants from the past, but maintained sites that — in many cases — were last updated in 2023. [Image “Body+-+Asset+2.png”] There are several angles from which we can analyze this design approach: – Fonts & Front-End Website Development Constraints – Technological Development & Stagnation – Institutional Digital Literacy (or the lack thereof) – Cultural Influence As with most topics, it is likely that there is no one right answer, but rather that this website design is the result of various factors interplaying over time. Fonts & Front-End Website Development Constraints Whereas creating new fonts for romanized languages can be an enjoyable challenge everyone with a basic understanding of typography, an appropriate program & some time on their hands, can take on, doing the same for Japanese is an endeavour on a whole other level. To create a font from scratch in English you’ll be looking at around 230 glyphs — a glyph being a single representation of a given letter (A a a counting as 3 glyphs) — or 840 glyphs if you want to cover all languages based on the Latin alphabet. For Japanese, as a result of the three different writing systems and countless Kanji, you will be easily looking at 7,000–16,000 glyphs or even more. So, creating a new font in Japanese requires both an organized team effort and a lot more time than its Latin counterparts. It won’t come as a surprise then that similar workloads ensue for Chinese and (Hanja) Korean fonts, leading to these languages being often covered in what are called CJK fonts. And with less designers rising to this particular challenge, there are less fonts to choose from when building a website. And with less designers rising to this particular challenge, there are less fonts to choose from when building a website. A place where misfits have a seat on the table and where bold, crazy ideas are highly encouraged. As a Product Designer, working at Apple was a life changing experience, and all I can say is that I’ll keep carrying some of its principles with me wherever I go. In the one year that I worked at Apple, here are the top 10 lessons I learned: TL;DR – Apple is a unique company and I believe that the way they do product design can only be successful due to their business model, which allows for innovation, failure, risks, and strong focus on design craft excellence, even if it takes a long time to get there. – Build a great product, not an MVP. – Storytelling is the best skill we need to develop as product designers. – A top-down culture is not as bad as we think. Great design will take you far, great communication will take you even further: influence people and move things forward. Projects get built when enough people believe in them. From small talks to elaborating decisions to VP presentations. The way we speak, project ourselves and elaborate our thoughts is fundamental for getting consensus, influencing people, and moving things forward. My biggest learning was to put passion into my speech. Not only when presenting work, but especially when talking in meetings. Be truly excited about your work and show this excitement to everyone working around you. Jobs had an amazing ability to make his ideas understandable and memorable because he spoke with passion. People may not remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel: confident, interested, optimistic, bored, reluctant, etc. At the end of the day, we’re not only selling products to customers externally, but also selling our ideas to teams and stakeholders internally, and the key to any successful sale is communication. Storytelling is your superpower: are we deck designers after all? One of the things that surprised me the most was to see that for any piece of work being shared, designers would put together a keynote deck for it. It could be the smallest thing, like a quick look at the latest work progression, or big presentations, of course. There seems to be this stark duality for filmmakers nowadays. Hollywood is only banking on movies based on renowned franchises with utterly colossal budgets. But as I was informed by my professors when I got my film producer certificate in 2021, there’s more opportunities than ever for indie and low-budget filmmakers to find audiences and funding thanks to streaming platforms and simplified distribution. The massive IP head of this fish continues to feed on superhero movies and endless reboot culture while its small indie tail glides it through the ocean. But what about the middle? What happened to the mid-budget production? Why has it seemingly died out? What Makes a Mid-Budget Movie Mid-budget movies are loosely defined as having a production budget between $5–50 million. Some producers even define that upper end more liberally, up to $75–100 million, although $5 million would easily be an indie film with decent production values (think of 2000s indie juggernauts The Room and Shaun of the Dead, both of which were produced for about $6 million each). Millennials in particular feel nostalgic for mid-budget movies because they hit their peak when we were growing up and coming of age from the 1980s to the mid 2000s, right around the advent of Netflix but before streaming became the norm. Mid-budget movies weren’t always memorable hits that got nominated for awards. They could become cult classics like Pineapple Express or redeemed by time like Freddy Got Fingered, but they also encompass all these movies you can watch for free on YouTube Movies that came out in this same era. 80s and 90s mid-budget flicks have this certain charm to them, even the movies that wound up being flops: sometimes they were blatant cash grabs and the actors were just phoning it in as a result, or they were fairly forgettable roles with paper-thin writing that preceded an actor’s big break. Hell, not just actors — the film world was SCREAMING upon finding out that noted DP Janusz Kaminski did the lighting for Vanilla Ice’s now-cult classic cringefest Cool as Ice before he worked on Schindler’s List. The mid-budget movie has encompassed unintentionally hilarious turkeys to hyped-up Academy nominees (some of which may have been overhyped). The range is wider than you think since they’re not given leviathan blockbuster budgets, but aren’t tiny indie films made with spit and staples that go on to become classics like Clerks. Gizem ÇETİNKOL – Gazete Ege / Geçtiğimiz haftalarda görevden almalarla gündeme gelen, Menderes Belediyesi bu sefer de maaşları ödeyememesi ile gündeme geldi.
İçişleri Bakanlığı’nın hakkında yürütülen soruşturma nedeniyle açığa aldığı ve halen yargı süreci devam eden Menderes Belediye Başkanı Mustafa Kayalar yerine gelen Belediye Başkanvekili Erkan Özkan’ın yönetim şekli gündemden düşmüyor. Açığa alınan Başkan Mustafa Kayalar’ın ekibine tırpan yapan Başkanvekili Erkan Özkan şimdi de belediye personeli ile karşı karşıya geldi.
Maaş ödemeleri ile ilgili sıkıntı yaşayan personel tabiri caiz ise harçlığa bağlandı. İddialara göre taşeron kadrosunda çalışan işçiler maaşlarını taksit usulü almaya başlarken, memurlarında 2 aylık ikramiyelerinin ödenmediği ve belediye içerisinde iç huzurun bozulduğu öğrenildi.
Menderes Belediyesi’nde geçtiğimiz dönem 450 kişi çalışırken, bu dönem personel sayısı 1200 kişiye yaklaşırken, geçtiğimiz günlerde 50 kişinin daha işe alındığı edinilen bilgiler arasında. İşe alımların devam etmesinden huzursuz olan personelin maaşlar ve ikramiyeler ödenemezken personel alımı yapılmasına tepki gösterdiği iddia edildi.
