July 14, 2023 Unlock every story on Medium and directly support the writers you read most for less than $1/week when you become a member. Join Medium. Hi everyone, I recently read about a psychological phenomenon called “specialness spirals” in which a person is unable to use an item because it’s too, well, special to use on a mundane day. University professor Jacqueline Rifkin researches consumption, and her article for Medium publication The Conversation addressed why some people are unable to convince themselves to use new items. “When people decide not to use something at one point in time, the item can start to feel more special,” she writes. “This accrual of specialness can be one explanation for how possessions accumulate and turn into unused clutter.” I know plenty of people who only use the “good china” for religious holidays or wait until a birthday to wear a pretty dress. I also know people who wear ball gowns for Zoom calls because… why not? It’s certainly a privilege to be able to have—or do—extra. But now I wonder: Where do you fit on the specialness spiral? I’d love to read about your approach to acquiring, removing, or re-using the things that clutter your life. And if you have no clutter? I’d love to read about that too. Feel free to tag my profile at the bottom of your story, and I’ll be sure to read it. See you on Medium. [Image “Header+-+Design+Thinking+%281%29.png”] How designers have succeeded and failed in our daily lives Design was my first love. She opened my eyes to the little things in life — how a mug handle curves to hold your hand; how a ketchup bottle stands on its lid; how you can fill a Cup Noodles and microwave it without needing a bowl. Design taught me to see things differently. Of course, I picked up other lenses along the way — music, history, economics— but I’ve recently come home to design to understand why we are the way we are. My return to design is in part because of work and in part because of my reading habits. In the latter half of college, I worked at an innovation center where we practiced Human-Centered Design. At work, I’ve been working on a project to develop software — lots of user experience (UX) design considerations. And, perhaps it’s been obvious in my writing, I’ve been fascinated with the social, cultural, and public health implications of urban design — how the space around us shapes our habits to drive to work or grocery shop once a week. Don Norman, author of The Design of Everyday Things, defines design as a practice “that is concerned with how things work, how they are controlled, and the nature of the interaction between people and technology.” In more concrete terms, I believe design concerns itself with how something can best be created to enforce a predetermined use case. A bottle of toothpaste, for example, is so intuitive, even a toddler can squeeze toothpaste onto a toothbrush. A great bottle of toothpaste, however, may come with a slider at the end to use every last drop. Design is not exclusive to everyday products, either. There’s industrial design, such as how boxy cars from the 1960s slowly became the curved, aerodynamic cars we have today. There’s user interface (UI) design, where designers concern themselves with whether the “Accept” button is on the right or left of a pop-up menu. And I can’t forget graphic design — my bread and butter during college — where art meets branding. So, in an effort to address a little bit of everything, this essay will attempt to survey how design, design thinking, and designers impact the world around us. The Norman Door: An Introduction to Design Thinking [Image “Body+asset+1+%288%29.png”] There’s an age-old example that designers will use to illustrate bad design: the “Norman Door.” Take a look at the picture above. Without the “Push” label, your first instinct would probably be to pull the door towards you. Its curved handle is practically inviting you to pull. Don Norman, mentioned previously, became so famous for calling out these unintuitive and shame-inducing doors, designers began to name them after him. According to Norman, the embarrassing act of pulling on a push door is not your fault. For example, the restroom in my company’s office has a push plate on the outside and a pull handle on the inside — no confusion possible. That’s a good door. There are many doors we can point to as good doors. A revolving door, for example, is strangely intuitive despite some cognitive friction upon one’s first encounter. Though it requires some timing and coordination, there’s no mistake about what you do: push the door. No handles. No frills. Just push. The automatic revolving door, however, is less intuitive because pushing the door interrupts the signal. You can’t push. You can’t control the timing. And the sensors don’t always activate immediately. Not a good door. — Read the rest on Medium [Image “CTA+-+Purple+%281%29.png”]
[Image “Header+-+Ocean+Heat.png”] Drought in Europe, dwindling Arctic sea ice, a slow start to the Indian monsoon — unusually hot ocean temperatures can disrupt climate patterns around the world, as an ocean scientist explains. Ocean temperatures have been off the charts since mid-March 2023, with the highest average levels in 40 years of satellite monitoring, and the impact is breaking through in disruptive ways around the world. The sea of Japan is more than 7 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) warmer than average. The Indian monsoon, closely tied to conditions in the warm Indian Ocean, has been well below its expected strength. Spain, France, England and the whole Scandinavian Peninsula are also seeing rainfall far below normal, likely connected to an extraordinary marine heat wave in the eastern North Atlantic. Sea surface temperatures there have been 1.8 to 5 F (1 to 3 C) above average from the coast of Africa all the way to Iceland. So, what’s going on? [Image “Body+asset+1+%287%29.png”] El Niño is partly to blame. This climate phenomenon, now developing in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, is characterized by warm waters in the central and eastern Pacific, which generally weakens the trade winds in the tropics. This weakening of those winds can affect oceans and land around the world. But there are other forces at work on ocean temperatures. Underlying everything is global warming — the continuing rising trend of sea surface and land temperatures for the past several decades as human activities have increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The world just came off three straight years of La Niña — El Niño’s opposite, characterized by cooler waters rising in the equatorial Pacific. La Niña has a cooling effect globally that helps keep global sea surface temperatures in check but can also mask global warming. With that cooling effect turned off, the heat is increasingly evident. Arctic sea ice was also unusually low in May and early June, and it may play a role. Losing ice cover can increase water temperatures, because dark open water absorbs solar radiation that white ice had reflected back into space. These influences are playing out in various ways around the world. — Read the rest on Medium [Image “CTA+-+Red+%282%29.png”]

[Image “Header+-+Propaganda.png”] The effectiveness of propaganda lies not just in its message, but in its design. Propaganda is far from being a relic of the past as it continues to evolve and adapt to the changing communication landscapes. Today, it permeates our digital spaces, influencing our thoughts and actions in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. But what makes propaganda so effective? How is it designed to penetrate our minds, and why do we often fall prey to it? Let’s look through the evolution of propaganda, break down the principles of its design, as well as explore psychological and sociological theories that underscore its effectiveness. Through historical and contemporary case studies, we will illustrate these principles in action. History of Propaganda Propaganda has been an instrumental part of society for as long as civilization itself. Its earliest roots can be traced back to ancient empires, where it was used to legitimize the rule of monarchs, spread religious beliefs, or celebrate military victories. The Egyptians, for instance, utilized propaganda through art and hieroglyphs that depicted their pharaohs as divine beings and invincible warriors. The term “propaganda” itself, however, has its origins much later in the 17th century. It comes from the Latin phrase: “Congregatio de Propaganda Fide” “The Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith,” a committee formed by the Catholic Church in 1622 to counter the Protestant Reformation and spread the Catholic faith. The introduction of the printing press in the 15th century marked a significant shift in the reach and influence of propaganda. Pamphlets, books, and illustrations could be produced and disseminated on a mass scale, shaping public opinion on matters ranging from religious doctrines to political ideologies. However, it was during the 20th century that propaganda took the stage in the global arena. Both World Wars showcased the use of propaganda as a powerful weapon. In World War I, the British used propaganda posters to encourage enlistment, demonize the enemy, and promote the purchase of war bonds. [Image “Body+asset+1+%286%29.png”] In World War II, Nazi Germany’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, crafted a vast and insidious propaganda machine to control information, manipulate public opinion, and foster a climate of fear and hatred toward Jews and other perceived enemies of the Reich. [Image “Body+asset+2+%281%29.png”] In the years following World War II, propaganda became a tool in the ideological battle between East and West during the Cold War. The United States and the Soviet Union utilized all forms of media ranging from radio broadcasts to film in order to spread their respective narratives and ideologies. [Image “Body+asset+3+%281%29.png”] When television became accessible in the mid-20th century ushered in a new era for propaganda. Political campaigns, commercial advertisements, and government messages could reach audiences directly in their homes, shaping public opinion and consumer behavior more effectively than ever before. With the rise of the internet and social media in the 21st century, propaganda has adapted once again. Digital platforms allow for the rapid, widespread dissemination of information, making them an ideal tool for propaganda. These new platforms have enabled state actors, political parties, extremist groups, and others to influence public opinion on an unprecedented scale. [Image “Body+asset+4+%281%29.png”] Misinformation and disinformation on the web spread like wildfire because of its nature to spread. Principles of Propaganda Design The effectiveness of propaganda lies not just in its message, but in its design. The way information is packaged and presented can greatly impact our perception and reception of that information. Though specific tactics may vary based on the medium, audience, and socio-political context, there are distinct and well-defined characteristics of effective propaganda design. — Read the rest on Medium [Image “CTA+-+Red+%281%29.png”]
[Image “Header+-+Smoke.png”] We tackled particulate pollution once. Can we do it again? The smoke was so thick, you couldn’t see much. It wasn’t healthy to go outside. People felt terrible after a few hours of breathing in the particles suspended in the air. They were fed up with the pollution, so they petitioned the authorities to do something about it. No, I’m not talking about living in parts of eastern North America during June, 2023. I’m talking about London in the seventeenth century. Back in the 1600s, though, they used much more flowery language than we do today: It was one day, as I was Walking in Your MAJESTIES Palace, at WHITE-HALL … that a presumptuous Smoake issuing from one or two Tunnels neer Northumberland-House, and not far from Scotland-yard, did so invade the Court; that all the Rooms, Galleries, and Places about it were fill’d and infested with it; and that to such a degree, as Men could hardly discern one another for the Clowd, and none could support, without manifest Inconveniency…. It is this horrid Smoake which obscures our Churches, and makes our Palaces look old, which fouls our Clothes, and corrupts the Waters, so as the very Rain, and refreshing Dews which fall in the several Seasons, precipitate this impure vapour, which, with its black and tenacious quality, spots and contaminates whatever is expos’d to it.… The above is an excerpt from a pamphlet called (following the wonderfully non-concise titling conventions of the time) Fumifugium, or, The inconveniencie of the aer and smoak of London dissipated together with some remedies humbly proposed by J.E. esq. to His Sacred Majestie, and to the Parliament now assembled. “J.E., esq.,” was John Evelyn, a British scientist, who wrote this open letter in 1661 to King Charles II of England. He argued that even ancient philosophers had known that the air was the “Vehicle of the Soul,” and that the smoke in the air was killing people. It was one of the first protests against air pollution. You might think that air pollution began with the Industrial Revolution, but in Britain, there were already plenty of problems with the air by the 1600s. “Sea-coal” (just what it sounds like — coal from undersea beds that washed up on the shore) had been an important material for heating some British homes since the Middle Ages, when Londoners ran out of wood to heat their homes, since they had cut down most of the nearby forests. Though it was a cheap and effective way to stay warm, burning this coal put quite a lot of sulfur, smoke, and soot in the British skies — and British lungs. The British were some of the first — though definitely not the last — to do battle with one of the modern era’s most persistent environmental problems: smoke. — Read the rest on Medium [Image “CTA+-+Dark+gray.png”]

Hi everyone, This week is typically a quiet one in the U.S., with a short week for a national holiday, and summer vacation plans starting to get put into action, so I want to keep my note brief. In this newsletter, we often focus on sharing writing that will help you get better at your work or your life, so it’s high time we also highlighted a selection of smart writing about how to do time off right. These aren’t travel tips, but ways of thinking about taking time off or going on vacation that can help level up your approach. The stories below are a mix of more recent stories and some from the vast library of great writing on Medium, and what better way to start than with Jenny Odell’s 2017 classic, “how to do nothing.” While not specifically about vacation, Odell argues that we all need to “protect our spaces and our time for non-instrumental, non-commercial activity and thought, for maintenance, for care, for conviviality.” Wise words. [Image “Header+-+Brand+Strategy.png”] Six years ago, I shared my 16 Rules of Brand Strategy, a list of tenets to build or test your company’s strategy. That article went viral and is still referenced today more than any of my other pieces. But consumers and culture have changed a great deal, so it’s time to write some new rules. Consider the original 16 rules to be the cost of entry. They are now the baseline requirement for brand building. This new and revamped list is how you build on that foundation and level up to greatness. You will quickly see that these rules are not only valuable for brands but can (and should) inform product, UX, sales, marketing, PR, HR and nearly every other business activity. 1. Don’t rebrand the product when you can rebrand the problem. Rebranding the product puts you in a consideration set with other products, but rebranding the problem can put you in a consideration set of one. EVRYMAN reframed the problem of therapy from “finding yourself” to “creating yourself” before they positioned their product. Cofertility rebranded the problem of fertility from “egg freezing and donation” to “touching human lives” in order to make their product newly relevant. We recently helped a client in the debt relief industry rebrand the problem of owing money. Debt relief is a murky category with shady players, and while we understood the tremendous integrity that our particular client was built with, we knew it made no sense to say, “Hey, trust us! We’re the good guys!” (a very common mistake many brands make). Instead, we dug deep in our psychographic research and saw something remarkable — when people go into debt, they become the debt. Their entire identities are reduced to one dimension: They no longer identify with their hobbies, they stop going to family functions, stop volunteering, stop enjoying time with friends, stop taking pride in their work, stop planning their lives. They lose what makes them human, and understanding this was the real brand opportunity. The brand wasn’t about an honest debt relief company with good products, although that was very true, the brand was about re-dimensionalizing people. We reframed the problem of “debt” to the problem of “losing selfhood.” And that is the concept we built their entire strategy on. Immediately, their rebranded ads, messaging and positioning saw a huge uptick, while the culture of the company evolved toward a singular vision that guided every decision toward a common goal. Think clearly about what you’re branding, because sometimes there is something much bigger than just the product — Read the rest on Medium [Image “CTA+Alt+%283%29.png”]
[Image “Header+-+Fail+Limit+Exceeded.png”] Why Twitter’s latest “rate limit” blunder may be their white whale It’s no secret that Twitter has been in decline for months. The will-he-won’t-he-destroy-the-network drama has spawned an entire ecosystem of wobbly social media upstarts trying to fill in the vacuum left behind. And even still, Twitter soldiered on. I found it difficult to quit entirely, because there were still valuable and important conversations and voices there I couldn’t get anywhere else. But today was different. Today, many Twitter users started to hit an error during their morning scrolls. “Rate limit exceeded — please wait a few moments then try again.” The problem is that waiting a few moments won’t fix the problem. If you’d had the “good fortune” to see Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s Tweet today announcing a major feature update (behavior which he has, in the past, promised to stop) you would have seen this: “To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits: — Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day — Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day — New unverified accounts to 300/day” — @ElonMusk on Twitter, 10:01 AM July 1 2023 They have now “temporarily” limited Twitter Blue users to 8000 post reads a day and all other users 800 post reads a day, based on an update a few hours later. No word on why the change or that specific number. (UPDATE: He later changed it to 1000/10,000. Clearly a “go fast and break things” mood this week.) Let’s dig into why this time IS different — and a framework you can use to make better decisions in your own work. In this post: – Examining the consequences – Business implications – Moving forward – Impact analysis: Avoiding the Elon Trap Examining the consequences This is where the walls come tumbling in. But why is this change so different from all the rest? Four key elements: – The huge mental model shift this represents for Twitter users – A decrease in value of company-curated content – Silencing of the most prolific Twitter creators – Weakened social graphs caused by mass unfollows to control post views Mental model shift No Twitter user has ever, in the history of Twitter, had to think about throttling how much they use Twitter unless it was for their own mental health. Twitter virtually invented infinite scroll behavior. In one fell swoop, that addictive loop is cut off — and in fact, that instinctive BASIC interaction loop with Twitter is now penalized, because if you go too fast or too careless you’ll burn out your posts too soon. What if you burn out your views in the morning and need a traffic update in the afternoon? Lost value of company-curated content Twitter has for years been trying to make “fetch” happen, metaphorically, to borrow a meme from Mean Girls. Time and time again they have foisted the For You or Home views on us, where algorithmically curated non-chronological posts are served based on what Twitter both thinks we want to see — and what they want us to see. Lately, that includes a lot of boosting of “blue checks,” or verified users. Let’s unpack this a little…Continue reading [Image “CTA+-+Blue+%282%29.png”]
